Towards Living
Self-Sufficiently
Workshop
The next workshop will be on the 19th of June 2010.
(From 9.30 am until 4.30 pm)
A workshop for those wishing to live more self-reliantly. It is especially of use to those moving or wishing to move to the country and or building an energy efficient residence, or converting their current residence.
We share our knowledge and experience gained in having converted Pindari towards being self-sufficient in power, heat, water, food and medicine, giving the participants the opportunity to see first hand a "self-sufficient" system working.
Areas of self-sufficiency discussed and viewed: (Bring a camera)
Power generation:
We have solar and wind turbine power generation with a back up wood fired steam
engine. We have extensive battery storage with a comprehensive switch board.
Water management:
We live in a dry area of Tasmania and water management is crucial for our
vegetables and medicinal herb growing. We collect water off our roof and from a
deep bore for house usage and efficiently pump water from either of two dams for watering the
garden. We have a natural spring from which we store water for emergencies and
for use in some of our products.
Water pumping is a large consumer of power and the energy economics of this is discussed in detail along with watering systems. We share our extensive but simple methods of water management.
Heating:
All heating for the family house including water is wood fired with some passive
solar heating. We share the economics, ergonomics and efficiencies in heating
water and the house.
Food self-sufficiency:
We share how we manage our extensive organic gardens from which we harvest food year round. We discuss
food storage, drying
facilities, seed collection and show you our efficient composting
methods, our weed management system and much more. You also view and learn of our
experience with our free range poultry.
Herbal medicines
A part of being self reliant is having your own medicinal herb garden. We have an extensive range of medicinal herbs which
may be viewed and we discussed the methods we use in harvesting and
processing these herbs.
Cost for the day is $40 Couples $60 (please bring a lunch)
