Pindari Sun & Skin Care Cream
Product information sheet.

Dear Friends,

We have been asked if we could produce a herbal/naturally based “sun cream” to protect against the now higher levels of UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. It is these two levels of radiation that in excess, burn and cause damage to our exposed skin.

We were asked for a product that was free of synthetic “block out” chemicals that may cause skin irritation and also of zinc compounds that can give a “ghost” look to the skin. At that time we were not able to come up with information on an available natural product that might reliably provide a degree of protection.

We continued research in the area and came across the reference (Current Problems in Dermatology 2001;29:157-64. Protective effects of topical antioxidants in humans. Dreher F, Maibach H. Department of Dermatology, University of California USA. ) and have obtained a copy of this document that details the research.

The strength of the sun this summer motivated us to produced a “sun cream” using plant material very high in natural plant antioxidants. We have also included in the formulation, other plant based extracts that have been found to be sun “protective,” anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.

The resultant “Sun and Skin Care” cream with its high anti-oxidant containing plant extracts is designed to provide an increased degree of natural protection against UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. At the same time, the cream formulation is designed to actively promote healing of the skin from previous oxidative damage both from the sun and damaging chemical exposure.

As support to this we have been receiving much positive feed back about the healing properties of our Calendula and Comfrey cream on “sun damaged” faces and on solar sclerosis conditions. The “Sun and Skin Care” cream has a much higher level of anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory activity within the aqueous and oil components and thus should also be helpful in treating solar skin damage.

The brilliant yellow colour of the cream comes mostly from Curcumin contained in the Turmeric tincture extract that we have prepared from fresh organic Turmeric root imported from Queensland .

Curcumin has been shown to have significant topical anti-inflammatory activity along with the flavonoids and other skin active compounds in the added extracts of Calendula and Chamomile. The cream should have a high potential for positively and naturally enhancing the skins own inbuilt protection and healing functions.

Flavonoids are known absorbers of UVB radiation and are probably in the plant’s tissue to act as natural protection from this radiation. They therefore have the potential to function similarly when applied and absorbed into the human skin as indicated by the research detailed in the reference. We have included cold pressed mustard seed oil in the formulation that is used in India for skin sun protection.

The advantages of the Sun & Skin Care cream are:

1.        The cream is derived from plant material; there are no “photo-active” added synthetic chemicals.

2.        It has moisturising, anti-inflammatory and healing properties, it being potentially useful for treating sunburn and other oxidative skin damage.

3.        The application of this cream to the skin should allow for the ongoing production of Vitamin D in our skin that is necessary for healthy bones. This is something of unknown potentially negative effect when using synthetic sun block products.

4.        It provides an possible alternative means for increased skin protection for those unable to use regular block out creams

The cautions needed to be aware of are:

1.        This cream does not function as, and should in no way be considered, a block out product.

2.        The brilliant yellow Curcumin in the cream may stain clothes thus needs to be rubbed in well.

3.        The cream must be thoroughly applied to all exposed areas of the skin and be repeated during ongoing exposure.

4.        The brilliant yellow colour may impart some of this colouring to the skin but this is found to be minimal and transient.

5.        The application of the cream should not give a false sense of security, allowing for a lack of caution against over exposure to the sun that may result in sunburn and skin damage. Still wear protective clothing and a broad rimmed hat.

6.        This cream does not reduce the very important need for the consumption of natural anti-oxidants contained within foods, especially vegetables and fruits, that provide the nutrient base for the skin’s own natural protection from the suns rays.

We ask if you would please carefully trial this product for its effectiveness in prevention and treatment of “sun damage.” We ask if you could kindly forward to us, any feed back especially any negatives.  Whilst we do not expect the following, we do not wish to market a product that is found to be ineffective, unpleasant to use, or is of little other value.

Kind regards     Ken Atherton Phc
